Reviewing PH's political ties to China is something Hontiveros desires.
The administration should reevaluate its political obligations to Beijing, particularly the One China Policy, according to Senator Risa Hontiveros.
On Wednesday, Hontiveros made her remarks following China's constant criticism of the Philippines for allegedly breaking the pact.
In the same manner that they have no right to cruise in the West Philippine Sea, they also have no right to dictate to us what to do.
We need to reassess this so-called One China Policy, as I have already demanded. Compared to a congrats to Taiwan, China has done many worse things in our regions, she continued.
At that point, the opposition senator urged the government to "get its act together."
Hontiveros emphasized, "We cannot have the President, who is the principal creator of foreign policy, say one thing while the Department of Foreign Affairs says another.
The DFA previously clarified that President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s contentious message of congratulations to Lai was merely an expression of gratitude for their invitation to accommodate almost 200,000 Filipino laborers who were stationed in Taiwan.
"However, the Philippines reiterates its One China Policy," DFA said reporters at the time.
China criticized the Philippines despite its reaffirmation of its commitment to the policy, arguing that President Marcos' remarks are "at odds" with the one-China Principle and contradict the Philippine government's statement, sending the wrong signals to separatist forces pursuing "Taiwan independence."
