Teodoro orders the AFP's counterintelligence squad to be reactivated.

In an effort to defend the armed forces against espionage, sabotage, and other intelligence operations, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) formally reactivated its counterintelligence group (CIG) on Thursday.

At the counterintelligence group's reactivation ceremony at Camp Aguinaldo, AFP Chief General Romeo Brawner Jr. led the group.

"The security of our dear country depends on the capable shoulders of the courageous men and women of the AFP-CIG," Brawner wrote in his statement.

He added, "Your unwavering efforts will ensnare any threats and guarantee the safety of our treasured citizens," hoping that the counterintelligence unit would "ascend to unimaginable heights" in order to protect the nation's rights and liberties.

According to the AFP, the counterintelligence unit was revived on January 11th, in accordance with an order from Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr.

The AFP's counterintelligence was established in 1989 and was dissolved in 1995 to form a presidential task group on intelligence and counterintelligence, during the Fidel Ramos administration.

The armed forces' intelligence operations are nevertheless managed by the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (ISAFP), which is separate from the AFP-CIG.
